Interiors as Inspiration: French Blue

master bedroom antique chest

I've always loved that perfect shade french blue. A little bit gray, a little bit green, a little bit blue. Restoration Hardware's Silver Sage is a perfect shade for walls. When it came time to choose colors for our Oklahoma home, I chose Pratt and Lambert's Contemplation for the living room and master bedroom. (It was just a little less blue than Silver Sage.) While I've used shades of yellow and brown to make the living room a little bit more spicy, I wanted nothing but peaceful serenity in the master bedroom. So, I've gone with all shades of aqua, french blue and white.

Aqua Damask Note Card

Our Aqua Damask Note Card is one of my personal favorites, and it reminds me of the perfect color palette for our master bedroom. In the shot above, you can barely see dust skirt on the bed, but it is classic aqua and ecru damask. I found it on clearance because of a slight color variance, and bought all three remaining bolts. I think I'd like to do an upholstered headboard out of it as well.

The room itself is a work in progress, so this shot illustrates just a corner. My mother is an excellent resource for all things furniture. She has an estate sale habit that translates into great deals for us. The chest is a piece by Milling Road, so while not a true antique, definitely has the crackled appeal of one.

Katie's Vintage Summer Wedding

I wanted to share some photos from Katie's wedding. You'll have to forgive the picture quality--I'm still learning things about the "fancy camera"!

Upon entering the reception hall, we were met with this darling set up of vintage lawn chairs under carnival lights. Katie set the perfect mood for a hot summer night, and it was fun to be indoors for a cool reception! The hanging lanterns remind me of the Martha Stewart "poofs". The fabric hanging in the background is what the photographer used as a backdrop to photograph each guest.

For a menu, Katie and Tyler served the most delicious spread of cheese, fruit and wine. It made for a scrumptious, light dinner. In addition to wine, they served iced tea and lemonade. Note the use of the galvanized tin to serve ice. So casual-chic!

Katie chose to have assorted cakes instead of one large wedding cake. The flavors were delicious, and there were probably 20 options--orange creme cake, chocolate covered strawberry cake, classic vanilla cake with chocolate icing, and the perfect strawberry cake!

pick a posie bag

Since Katie's parents are florists, greenery and flora abounded. At each table she placed these little cellophane bags that read, "Pick a posy from your table." Isn't that a darling idea? There were gorgeous orchid centerpieces--I just wanted to take home one of those!

sneakers and high heels

Here is a shot of Katie and Tyler during their first dance. The shot describes them perfectly--sneakers for him, vintage heels for her.

note cards for reserved tables

Katie used Whitney English note cards printed with "Reserved" as place holders on the family tables. She created table runners out of vintage table cloths.

I love this shot of Jessica, above. Jessica was part of the house party--notice the magnolia in her hair. Katie had all her bridesmaids and house party wear a magnolia on the side of their head, which was another precious Southern vintage touch. She used assorted vases, including the mason jars above, to hold the thousands of flowers that filled the room. Note the vintage wicker handbag (so Kate Spade, don't you think?). It was a gift to me from Sara Hicks Malone, and matched the theme of the evening and my Lilly sundress perfectly!

flower wreath at reception

Hanging in the center of the hall was this huge wisteria and curly willow wreath, lavishly adorned with flowers. At the end of the reception, all the guests gathered below it, and the photographer used a lift to take a picture of everyone. You can see the carnival lights in the backgrounad again.

Here are Katie and Tyler cutting the cakes!

All in all, it was a precious, charming wedding that reflected the tastes of the bride and groom so well. The flowers were lush, the meal was delightful, and the summer vintage theme was a refreshing twist on a traditional summer wedding.

Classic Pink

Do you remember, about six years ago, when pink was the new pink? Darling, bubble gum pink was everywhere. My favorite cable knit sweater of all time was purchased in the height of the pink craze, and now has been worn to a raw-elbow state. How long did that phase last? About three years? Maybe longer, if you consider that there will always be a few people hanging on to pink with die-hard ferocity.

If we're honest with ourselves, pink is a classic. It stands for breast cancer and baby girls, and reminds us of cupcakes with sprinkles and rose gardens. While other colors wax and wane, pink will be with us for the long haul.

Above, some of our Whitney English favorites: the Fruit on Ecru was inspired by my own wedding; pink leopard charms us all and makes a sweet, but feisty statement; the Mod Floral Berry was inpsired by vintage fabric, but I love this color combination; preppy stripes take on new life in a pink, green and brown color scheme.

Recent Buzz

leah lattice pattern in pink blue green brown orange light blue
On top of the Country Living magazine feature, we've had a fun bunch of recent press lately. Mary Englebreit's Home Companion featured our NEW journals and Traditional Home quoted us on the inspiration for one of our new note card designs. Both press mentions used one of my favorite new designs--the Leah. The Leah was inspired by hundred-year old Italian and Morroccan tiles, but it reminds me of the recent lattice trend we've seen popping up everywhere. While we've issued it in four fun color combinations, I can't decide if my favorite is the fresh, modern-beach color combo of navy and orange, or if I prefer the classic, whimsical feel of the berry and celadon.

I'm super excited about our journals, which will debut at the National Stationery Show in May. As soon as I get more comfortable posting pictures on this blog, I'll upload some. We have tons going on in the product development department right now, so stay tuned for more updates and surprises!
